Curatorial Remarks

Note

History: Manufactured for the Dutch market. A very similar although slightly smaller plate bearing the arms and name of "ARTOYS" (Artois) is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. PM.64.7 and the plate at the Met seem to have come from the same service, one of four depicting 21 armorials of the chief towns and provinces of the United Netherlands--including those territories under French and Austrian control--and those of England and France. The various services differ primarily in their borders; of the four services, the set represented by PM.64.7 is the closest to being complete.
