MP.94.556 a-bDescription
This chest of drawers with looking glass is described as black walnut; although in many places it appears to be made of mahogany (per Mike Pelletier, a site historian); appears to be Victorian Renaissance Revival style; a large bow tops the segmented arch with a center ribbon running down to a large porcelain cartouche showing the allegory of morning: a winged woman, facing right, dispensing flowers with a child holding a torch and riding on her back; colored in greens, blues and pinks; two large scrolls flank the cartouche; two leafy swags cascade down each side underneath; carved grapes peep out and leafy forms flow towards two round rosettes with grape forms; the rosettes rest atop a bulbous turning with a neck and tapering fluted column; a round shelf projects from beneath a fluted segmented column atop a base of lotus leaves sitting atop a projecting two layer box of drawers; drawer pull is half circle with lotus mounds on top and acorns flanking either side; mirror in center is large oval with large rim; four hinge- or bracket-like ornamentations are on the top and bottom; a reversed lotus mound at the center top; an acorn shape is on the glass; all of this is under the cartouche; mirror rests upon a marble topped chest of drawers; round circles with beveled edges project from corners; a three drawer chest of drawers with the shallowest at the top is surrounded by a rosette of lotus leaves and horizontal fleur-de-lis projections; similar, but larger, drawer pulls; recessed wood is veneered mahogany; second and third drawer are similar and with center rosette encircled by a square-shaped moulding; two handles on each side as well as the horizontal fleur-de-lis pattern; fluted columns flanking the dresser rest atop a small bulbous pad atop an ornamented veneer engraving of Victorian swirls over a bulb foot; front skirt is large and unornamented with a concave lip; sides of piece have a quartered panelling effect with mouldings and veneers.
