Description

A Victorian alabaster mantel clock with a classical shallow calyx shaped urn on top. The urn is flanked by two bronze tendril-like handles that have a styled leaf motif at their ends and rings. It stands on a support that is composed of a torus-shaped piece of alabaster between two pieces of bronze. The support rests on the top of the body which is stepped, the last step framed in brass. The body is cube-shaped on either side elongated scotia-shaped pieces of alabaster move from the underside of the upper cornice to the top of a cylindrical elipse-shaped form, on the front of which is a bronze band that mimicks the eliptical shape. The circular clock face is centrically located and colored black and white. The hands have rings three-quarters of the way down and the numbers are Roman numerals. The face is encircled by a bronze frame with a hinged glass and bronze framed lid. This glass and bronze lid is found on the back side as well to allow for access to the insides. About the clock face in the corners are four small pointed bronze projections. The base is rectangular with a descending concave surface that ends with a bronze frame before squaring off. The whole clock is bi-laterally symmetrical about the central axis. The clock stands on four bronze feet. The clock is mounted on an eliptical wooden stand made of rosewood (?) on boxwood (?). On the top of the stand is a recessed eliptical band probably used to secure a glass dome. A metal key is also present.
