This covered urn has a finial of cast bronze putto seated, arms raised, holding a laurel wreath. This detachable piece has a threaded stem that fits the lid of cast bronze which has acorn, oak, and laurel leaves in relief. The cup is heavily ornate, having rose leaves, flowers, and buds surrounding a large cartouche on each side of cup. One cartouche has putto bestowing laurel leaf on Greek Philosopher's head; below this, on the bottom of cup is a band of empty cartouches wrapping around base. The underside of cup has circular gadrooning. The stem has five rectangles separated by five oblong beads. This terminates on top of a mound of lotus leaves which rest on a black onyx base or shelf, chipped in one corner. This is trimed in convex brass molding. Sitting below this is a cast box of four sides. Side 1 in relief a putto with Greek oil flask, or lekythos. Sides 2 and 4 a Cupid with arms outstretched to a child, behind is a truncated column with possible sundial resting on its top. Side 3 has a Cupid sitting alone writing, quill in hand with a truncated column and sundial in background. The trim is again of convex brass molding which wraps around a black onyx base of convex and concave surface resting on four bronze lion's paws.
Condition: A chip out of the onyx and the lid has a female socket with damaged threading.Made/Created
