Curatorial Remarks

Note

This is one of the objects from the collection that inspires the most inquires and requests for images. HHV has the original mold (in storage at UC) and a reproduction of the same mold (in storage in the visitor center at PM as of 9/2015). This reproduction was used to make cookies at some point in years past (see illustration on the over of Peter G. Rose's Delicious December, published in 2015, for example). Evidently HHV also sold the cookies in the gift shop (based on an image of such on the website for the St. Nicholas Center, see object file for copies for these images). An illustration of the mold also appears in Jeremy Seal's book Santa published by Pan McMillan, re-issued in 2015. In September 2015, curator Ed Gyllenhahl from Glencairn Museum contacted HHV for more information, having borrowed a cast-iron version of the mold owned by HHV from the National Christmas Museum for an exhibition. I provided him with an image and the information about our piece, which I believe to be older than the cast-iron example, certainly in higher relief than the cast-iron example. The cast iron example was thought to be 18th century by the staff at the National Christmas Museum [Jessa J. Krick, 9/10/2015].
