Curatorial Remarks

Note

Original needlework dates to 1690-1740, but motifs have been cut out and added to later red harrateen (somewhat corse linen or wool textile) backing, probably during the19th or early 20th century; in the 2010s, Jessa spoke to the daughter (Yvonne Ilych) of one of the women who did this re-applique work at or for SHR/HHV and sent her several photos of the bedhangings from Cross-Section for use in her mother's show-and-tell at her assisted living facility; the mother said the textiles were "signed" someplace [not confirmed].

General Note

Note

Bed hangings, once installed and on view at Philipsburg Manor in the late 1960s, certainly in 1970 (see Bibiliography for dates of illustrated articles).
