Description

Daguerreotype of an oil painting of a woman in leather case. The woman of middle age is shown leaning on her right hand. Her left hand rests on a book. She is wearing a white cap which is held in place with a black ribbon tied in a bow under the chin. She wears a white blouse and a black cloak or robe. The woman's cheeks are tinted pink. The all over color of the daguerreotype is dark brown. The daguerreotype is kept in a stamped leather case. Both inner and outer surfaces of case and its cover have gilt border at the edge. The decoration of the outside of the case consists of a six-petalled flower in a six-pointed star with a cartouche, which consists of eight c-scrolls around it. There is a border of foliage intertwined with s-scrolls outside the cartouche. The ornament on the outside of the cover is identical to that on the case. Inside the case there is an oval stamped brass frame around the daguerreotype. The frame has a floral vignette in each corner. The daguerreotype is protected by glass. The cover has a crimson stamped velvet lining with scrolled vignettes in the center and in the four corners. The case has two hook-and-eye closures.
