SS.64.21

Description

Dessert knife, one of set of 18: thin silver blade with rounded point, bearing French hall-marks set into blunt-ended ivory handle of oval section, marked with niello-like Gothic capitals: "W.I." Marks: All 18 knives marked with maker's touch: "P.Q" in lozenge, with flaming torch between the letters. 17 knives marked with chamfered-cornered square containing helmeted head, facing right, with Medusa-like locks and "4" on crest (silver std. mk.). 1 knife bears head with helmet in rectangle with rounded ends. All knives bear, on reverse side, a touch (probably of city guild warden) that is almost obliterated in most instances. One is of bee or hornet (illustrated) a second might be either a bug or a hive; a third appears to be "J" with part of a bee; still another seems to be the opposed heads of two grasshoppers.
