MP.2005.115Description
Watercolor drawing on paper of two "stinkhorns" (Mushrooms of Northeast North America, p.87), and an egg, in shades of olive-green, beige, and white, accompanied by text, written in pencil, on right side of page: image to far right is of subspherical-shaped egg embedded in earth; the beige color connotes the gelatinous layer covering the olive-green spore mass (p.87); specimen in center measures 6 1/2 inches in height; its olive-green spore mass at the apex is uncovered and visible because it is a mature specimen; net-like skirt flares out below the head; stalk is stout, white, and porous; at base a frilly beige layer looks like inverted skirt; beige tendrils extend down from base; specimen to far left measures 5 1/2 inches; its olive-green spore mass is slightly visible beneath beige gelatinous layer, thus this specimen is not yet fully mature; undeveloped skirt sits below head; stalk and base are similar to middle specimen, including tendrils; text at right is as follows: " Sept 7-1900 Litchfield, Conn / Egg found growing in rich bark / shaded by black alders, taken home / as some species of the Lycoperdaceae / it began drying up, and on Sept 11 / it broke and developed as far as / this sketch shows / Dictyophora duplicata".Made/Created
