Scope and Content

Soldier Jared Lane (1752-1839) used this printed almanac as a ledger and record of troop movements from Connecticut to Tarrytown and New Jersey in the years 1776-1777. In it he lists milages and town names, sometimes adding weather information. Words such as pork, canteen, and bake give us other insights into daily life in the military. The printed part of the almanac contains astromomical information as well as monthly weather predictions, Friends Yearly Meetings in New-England, pages of town names and their Houses of Entertainment, a long narrative poem, patriotic verses, an Address to the Tories, and a little map of the "...Present seat of war at and near New-York."
