Fishkills the 26th. Aug’t. 1785 __ Dear Sir I am much concerned as the difficulties Mr. Brigg / meets with in Obtaining the peacable possession of the farm / he purchased of Stephen [Haff]; and as the Estate of Mr / Verplanck is at present circumstanced that it is in our power / to doe so little for his relief. I should however Imagine that / Mr [Haff] unlefs his having been within the lines should / prove an Obstacle will have it in his power to sue for / redress; but as this Remedy would prove tedious and expensive / I cou’d wish that any Other method was tryed. I can hardly / think that Crawford will long Obtinately persist in holding / the possession of a farm to which he can have no manner / of right. Mr. [Docke] having had positive directions to let / the vacant farms only from year to year and he well / knows that it was the determined purpose to return them to the / respective Lefsees whenever they should be suffered to return to / their homes. I have persuaded Mr. Briggs to endeavour / to doe what he cou’d by Gentle means and the Interference / of friends and by showing Crawford some little Indulgence / till he can suit himself with the plan. Mr. Barber Agent for settling continental debts is / arrived at Poughkeepsie. I purpose calling on him in a / day or two and I hope that Mr. Rooney has procured the / Vouchers As we then might induce the whole demand / [END OF PAGE 1] In one settlement, unlefs you think it best to defer the Matt[-er] / till he gets to West Chester County. With respectful compliments / of all here to Mrs. Cortland and family. I am with Esteem ___ / Dear Sir. Your most humble Ser’t ______ Sam’l: Verplanck Hon’b Pierre V. Cortlandt _ [LABEL] Sam’l Planck
