EVENTS death of Emily Burral Hoffman (“sister”) from scarlet fever, religion, conversion
Friday morning June/
I did not intend my beloved Em to have/ delayed answering your letter so long, and now I have but mournful/ news to tell you, Sister Emily died yesterday afternoon, she was/ taken sick with the scarlet fever Sunday she had it lightly they/ thought, and were not in the least alarmed, yesterday evening she/ seemed no worse, but she had not slept the night before and the/ physician gave her an anodyne she never woke, but at five passed/ from sleep to death almost without a struggle. Ogden is nearly/ distracted he was not with her he left at half four to/ go to court without any idea of danger thinking she was in a/ sweet sleep, in a little while they send for him and before he/ rushed home all was over, may God give him strength to bear it/ little Ogden is a great deal afflicted. B [unrecovered] is at school, and/ poor little Charley unconscious of his loss plays and talks as ever he/ knows she is dead and talks about it but is too young to feel it./
I am sorry dear Emma that you could suppose that your s[sentiments] / on [religion] could influence our feelings towards any of you and / make your family cast you off, where the change is sincere and/ proceeds from conviction not from sudden excitement all should/ rejoice it and again in/ a short time. You say nothing of Matilda in your last letter/ will she not write or at least send her love to me when you/
