Bill of Sale for an enslaved man named Tom between Baltus Van Kleek and Pierre Van Cortlandt I
Context
Know all Men by these Presents That I Baltus Van Kleek of Rumbout Precinct in Dutchess County and The Province of New York Yeoman for and in Consideration of the Sum of Ninety Pounds Current Money of the Province of New York to me in Hand Paid at and before the Ensealing and Delivery of these Presents by Pierre Van Courtlandt of Courtlandt Manor in the Province of New York the receipt whereof I do Herby Acknowledge and My Self to be Therewith fully Satisfied Contented and Paid have Granted Bargained Sold and Released and by these Presents do fully Clearly and Absolutely Grant Bargain Sell and Release unto the Said Piere Van Courtlandt a Negro Man Slave Named Tom Aged About Twenty-four years to HAVE AND TO HOLD the Said Negro Man Slave named Tom unto the said Piere Van Courtlandt His Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns for Ever, and I the said Baltus Van Kleek for my Self my heirs & Executors and Administrators do Covenant and agree to and with the above Named Piere Van Courtlandt his Executors Administrators and Assigns to warrant and Defend the Sale of the above Named Negro Man Slave Named Tom Against all Persons Whatsoever In-Witness Whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the Thirteenth day of June One Thousand Seven Hundred and fifty Eight.
