RECTO Copy To All to whom these presents shall come – Gretting. Know ye that we the subscribers do hereby liberate manumit and Set free the following persons formerly slaves of Our Deceased Father the late Pierre Van Cortlandt Esqr. To Witt Ishmael a Neagro Man and Sibby his wife and Abbey their Daughter Sally a Neagro woman And Phillis a Neagro woman and Jane her Daughter In Witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands and seals the 29th day of September 1814. Town of Cortlandt in the County of Westchester Witness P.C.V. Wyck Ph V Cortlandt Pierre Van Cortlandt Catharine Van Wyck Cornelia Beekman Ann Van Rensselaer VERSO This is to Certify that we the Poormasters for the Town of Cortlandt having Examined the following Slaves “left by the Honble Pierre Van Cortlandt Deceased” and proposed to be manumitted by the Heirs” – To Wit, Ishmael, a Neagro man Sibby his Wife and Abbey their Daughter – Sally a neagro woman – and Phillies a Neagro Woman and Jane her Daughter – Are of opinion that they are all Healthy and of Sufficient Ability to provide for themselves and appear to be Under the age of Forty Five years (Except the neagro woman Phillis who appears to be about forty eight years of Age and therefore cannot be finally manumitted so as to Discharge the Estate) – but we are of opinion and do hereby Certify that the others above named To Wit. Ishmael, Sibby, Abbey, Sally and Jane are of Sufficient ability to provide for themselves and may all be manumitted agreeably to the Statute of the State of New York in Such case made and provided.
