You ask me if we are still / to the Hôtel Du Rhin? Yes_ and I begin to / doubt if we shall ever leave the enchanting / spot. Occasionaly we send for Mr Marcheal / & find any quantity of fault & threaten to / leave, then he promises to do so much better / for the future, that we are induced / [END OF PAGE 1] to remain_. As to what we do + probably / Mr Coleman's letter will inform you, as he / told me to day that he had written you / and said of us, that we had "nothing / to do but read the news papers & love"__ / We have just received an invitation / from Mrs.. [Moulton] for monday evening, it / is to be the début of her daughter & quite / a large ball._ Mrs.. Walsh gave a party / on friday, which is said to have been a / magnificent affair in the Paris sense, / which is somewhat different from ours__ / Mrs Haight gave a recherché dinner / last week, (by the by tell Mr Hamilton / I am rather disappointed in his beauty) / those are the only American entertainments / I have heard of__ We have made all our preparations / for the Presentation. How I wish you were / all here to go with us, I can't tell you / how desolate we have felt since your / departure, sometimes we have become / quite desperate, & decided to leave forth- / with then the recollection that it is winter, / and rather cold to visit Russia, has / determined us to remain until the spring / when I hope we shall see you. Do / hurry through Italy & come back and / [END OF PAGE 2] Spend a month or two here_ / The second masquerade is to be given on / Saturday at the Grand Opera, the stores / are filled with dominoes, masks, & all / sorts of queer dresses, & present a most / attractive appearance at night when / lighted , with persons trying on / the various costumes__ At the Italien Opera there is a new star Melle Alboni, as yet we have been unable / to obtain places every thing desirable having / been engaged for a week or two. Report / says she sings delightfuly, second only / to Jenney Lind, but that she is shocki-[page torn] / -ly plain, being perfectly even from head / to foot, not the least appearance of a wais-[t?] / Grisi is exerting herself astonishingly & / for the last few nights is said to have / quite revived her departing glory___ The little writing case has been a perfect / treasure, I use it on all occasions & value / it exceedingly for its many conveniences, & / for having been the travelling companion / of one I love so well.___ With love to Mr. & Miss Hamilton in / which Mr.. B_ joins, & in the hope / of meeting you ere long, believe me, my dear Mrs Schuyler / yours truly, M. Bergh [END OF PAGE 3] [ADDRESS] Mme Schuyler (aux soins de Mesrs Torlonia & Co) Rome Italy [POSTAL NOTATION] [??] d’ Angleterre [7?]3 [POSTAMRK 1 - red] V[EN]D[I?] [U]NINGA [POSTMARK 2 - red, circle] ROMA 3
