My Dear Sir
I rec’d yours of August 20 1848 on my / return from the West a few days since and answer it at / the earliest opportunity.
All you have to do in reference to / admifsion to the Cincinnati, is to make your / application as an hereditary member, as eldest / son, in place of your father deceased. You must / have a certificate to this affect from some person / Known to the Society. If you wish it, I will give / the certificate. You also want a certificate of / good moral character from some respectable / person, say your Rector or whoever you please . / On this point the constitution is imperative, / altho in your case, of course, it is a mere / matter of form. Call on me when you come / down at my office No 5 Broad Street, and / we will arrange the matter.
The September [number?] of the /
[END OF PAGE 1]
American Quarterly Register has just been / handed to me, and I notice at page / 501 a respectful obituary notice of your / father.
I beg to be remembered to Mrs Van / Cortlandt and a—-
Very sincerely your friend
