My Dear Mother
I have just received your / letter and was happy to hear you were well and that / Gardiners health continues to improve. I am spending / my time very pleasantly. We ride out every day / at 11oclock with the [belz?], and when the weather / is pleasant we generally go our again in the afternoon / either to walk or drive. I have had a number of / ladies to call on me and shall tomorrow return / some of their visits, there is a large party tonight / at Mrs [Groschers?] Eliza wishes me to go but I / declined . but insisted it should make no difference / about her going. So she and the Dr are going / it is two miles out of Town, I never enjoy large / parties and as I had no dress suitable for the / occasion __ I decided not to go. __ I was very / much surprised to hear of the Patroon and his / family going to Europe. I had see it announced / in the papers but thought it might be a mistake / meaning Philip. It is [irregular] Sarah has never / said any thing about it, how Aunty will [sail] / Mrs [Stephen] and Dr [Patten] too, if he leaves Albany
[END OF PAGE 1]
Which probably he will. I have through a great / deal about [^ her] + how lonely she would be this winter / since I heard of the Patroons going to Europe . if you / get a letter from Sarah you must send it to / me . __ I was sorry to hear Mr [Strong?] had died / + [never again?] I cannot tell yet what time I / shall return but I shall be at least a week / longer here. Eliza will return with me unless / she goes by the way of Shelter Island to / New York. She has promised to spend a day or / two there. And she thought she would go to / there and then take the Long Island Rail Road to / New York. She has not decided yet which / way she will go . she does not intend taking / the baby . she is teething and the weather is so / changeable / she is afraid of giving her cold . she / thinks she cannot be more than a day at Grove Hill / for she will have a great deal of shopping to do in / New York and her visit all to gether will be / a hurried one as she leaves the baby behind / The baby is very healthy and large of her age / but not very [forward?] / she neither walks or / creeps yet. _ We had some young ladies staying / at Mrs Cliffords and Mr Howard here to tea / a few evenings since. And we all went to / the Picture Gallery the next evening . there / is a very fine collection of pictures exhibiting / at present by the R. I. Arts Association. Eliza
