Ottawa, February 26th 1840
Dr Dir,
In sending Gen. Aaron Ward, a pair / of prairie chickens or grous, prepared as they are / when exhibited at Museums; it has occurred / to me that such a specimen of the abundant / game of the West, would not be unacceptable / to you, as a present from an old friend.
The two pair are now [packed?], and will / leave here in a week or fortnight on their way / East. I should have been glad to have sent / you some for your table this winter, (the only / season of the year when they could reach you / fit for such purpose,) but I have not had / an opportunity.
My wife joins me in my respects to / you and your family and believe me
Yours Very Truly
