Curatorial RemarksNote
The doubloon or commemorative coin is an enduring symbol of Mardi Gras. These highly detailed and sometimes brightly-colored coins are thrown from the floats by paraders. Many have become collector's items. Doubloons are stamped with the different carnival or social club's logo on one side and the parade’s theme on the other. Consequently, no two clubs have doubloons that are exactly alike, and each year they are different. They are minted in various colors, and from different materials, like aluminum, silver, bronze and now plastic (www.mardigrasday.com) [Jessa J. Krick, 9/4/2013]Note Type
