Curatorial Remarks

Note

Donor received drawing from granddaugther of Benson Lossing, and provided the artist's attribution. Dating a bit uncertain. Inscribed "1835" on back of drawing, however, that was the year that Irving purchased Sunnyside, so the cottage would not have looked as it does in this drawing. Pencil dates on back refer instead to the fictional "1656" date on the west side and the date of Irving's purchase. Possibly a sketch related to preparatory work for Lossing's The Hudson from the Wilderness to the Sea. [Jessa J. Krick, 3/23/2016].
