Curatorial Remarks

Note

According to research conducted by Curatorial Technician Caitlin Monaco with the permission of Jessa Krick in the spring of 2019, the wedding of Laura Geddes Baldwin was June 22, 1859 (see Object File). The story that Irving paid for the dress is likely to be family lore, there is no documentation of this, nor is the bride, the dress or the upcoming wedding mentioned in known Irving's letters of the period. Catalina Hannan confirms the lack of documentation. In early-to-mid-1859, Irving's health was deteriorating and Cat believes it is "unlikely" that Irving had much or anything to do with the wedding or his grand-niece's bridal attire. Given that the dress was donated to HHV without the specific date of the wedding associated with it, the family record-keeping is incomplete at best and could well have been embellished over the years [Jessa J. Krick, Assoc. Director of Collections, July 16, 2019].
