Curatorial RemarksNote
According to HHV curator Kate Johnson, later alterations to the dress were removed by Anne Adams, who served as HHV's historic clothing supervisor during the 1970s and 1980s. The dress appears to have been styled as an open robe at the time of accessioning (see photos in object file) and in the photograph featured in Sleepy Hollow Restorations: A Coss Section of the Collection (1983), however it now is styled as a closed robe with waist ties, possibly as the result of conservation work done by Adams. The skirt fabric appears to be original to the dress and may have been folded back to create an open robe, an alteration which has now been reversed. An additional piece of the same moire textile is in the HHV collection (#?). The sleeve ruffles and neckline ruffles now on the dress are reproductions. The lace cuffs (VC.59.858 b-c) that were part of the dress when it was accessioned were removed, possibly by Anne Adams, as they appear to be machine-made 19th-century additions. [Jessa J.
