My dear Son
I have great pleasure in en= / closing to you a letter from your dear Mother who is / in the enjoyment of the ??? but health she and I / came here two days ago where we have remained un - / til this day with the exception of our visit to NY to attend / a [Yankees? Yonkers?] dinner _ The farm Stock +c was appraised a [page torn, unrecovered] / 21 [ust?] in order to settle with the [?-ale?] and to commence / an [^the] [association?] with those who are to come here on the i [page torn, unrecovered] / to my great surprise I found I had $340 of hay which [page torn, unrecovered] / [leave me?? at gross? ??] by a surplus of 240 and I have I / presume 150 bushels of oats with Rye wheat & [bush?] wheat / excepting wages we have not spent for the family [here? page torn, unrecovered] / over $10 since last Dec’r and do not expect to spend any / thing except for Groceries until after the 10 or 15 May and / yet we live as well our as we desire and are an [page torn, unrecovered] / =pey as ever _ I have turned [Lee?] over to the farm at $60 / reserving the right to [?resume him?] when I please paying / that sum towards del-[??] an other farm horse I do this / that in case he should turn out to the a trotter I may have / the advantage of it His work will be very light & / his pasture good [Syrius?] is very [fine?] The two younger / culls look very well as does [Idurulla?] who will give / me another Colt in May by a trotting Horse I am / now engaged in Making a Hot bed altho the snow has not yet left the garden and the frost is very deep / in the ground I hope to get out some more trees before / it is too late all the fruit trees have been trimmed and / look well our Winter particularly the latter part has / been of [un—?-ed?] [severely hindered?] this month / up to this day has been more like Jany than March.
I do not think the [House?] of [??] Can by [suffer in? as ] / it does at so many other [points? Parts?] has been {wished/bruised?crushed?] In / [relation? latter] map with the “deep Red line” In the 1st / [illegible, unrecovered]
[END OF PAGE 1]
Place it is said by Featherstonhaugh that GB had just sent / a map the [Shirfen?] knew all that we did 2d This map / is not proved to be the one which Franklin referred to in / his letter _ But if it is admitted to be the same it is only / after all the [Ra??] opinion of one of the [Carr??] / or quite to [??] of two others who certainly under= / stand the subject better than He did. Mr Jay + Mr / Adams They concerned entirely in the opinion as to / the High[-line?] & which we have always urged Nis/ Bul / of the [??] not so It is by no means [??] which / could over rule Mitchels map referred to in the / treaty of 83 as [th??] before the [can ??] or the express lan= / guage of the Treaty again no Land as [webster/benton/??] in / one of his letters seems to refer to this or some other / [page torn, unrecovered] of [?evidence] which had not been before drawn into / discussion. But above all you must [realize?] that / in such a discussion neither party is bound to present / evidence against itself and that when Webster / in one of his [final?] letters goes into the merits of the / question Ashburton says I do not [seem?mean?] to enter / into that discussion _ I can to compromise and to / that let us confirm ourselves & such was the / cause It seems now to be [Ademdled] by all / (except that stupendous Lyar Mr Featherstonhaugh / who when I knew him as I did well at allowing / in 1820-21_ was so accomplished in that was as / to make His name + his statements a [Lyre??]) that / the ground upon which GB rested the [^ on] right when / & according to language of the treaty was because / the Territory was necessary to her line of com - / munication [between?] her [po-?? Is] = our Our / President’s conduct in removing Whigs who put / him into place to allow a [nomination?] by giving / offices ot the [Li=??] is truly disagreeable Indeed / the whole case of our quarrel for some time / past tends most strongly to [??mergers?] into / [can??]. You will mark our vacilating [sic] / policy in regard to the Slave Trade In 24 we / sign [sic] a [c?? Law?]] which [??-ed] in Washington / gave the right of search of England and in 42 /
[END OF PAGE 2]
We are ready to take fire at the very intimation _ Webster / will [st–??] [??]] in the cabinet CLay will be [red - uced?] / by the Whig committee to be held in May 1844 and will / unquestionably by defeated _ There is now an un -[??] = / reliable branch in the [Le??] Party and I think it [most?] / probable [Van?] will get get the nomination or it he / does that there will be an other in the field _ In / our state there is a [R–?] [put] away the [Lesc’s] Young / Secty of State has come out boldly in favor of Republicans / and some of some of his party in the Senate have urged / a note of [concern?] How it will [??] I know not / If they would eject him it would be of infinite / Service to the State and Country as it would make / in the most + equal manner the [s-??] of a majority or / rather of 2/3ds of the Legislation upon this / Flagitious proposition There is not / under a [???] enough for that / Indeed I do am not sure that / at a future day when we may be [illegible, unrecovered] [page torn, unrecovered] / [-minded?] that there will not be a majority in favor of R -[page torn, unrecovered] / =pudiation even in this state The Subterraneans as they / are called (a [partner?] of the [Leso?] Party in the Legislature) / are [numerous?] and [Wm. ??] will be one of them / They go in truth the doctrines which the whole Party have / Preached but not Practised Hard many _ That / our Legislature could bind a [rescinding] on +c +c _ The / trial of MacKenzie is ended but the result is not / Known It is believed he will be fully acquitted the / Public opinion is generally in his favor _ I will send / in the course of a few days a Box with books and your / saddle delivered to Mr Irving to the care of dir’r / General at [Cadiz?] or Malagra [?? uncle G?] these Gulle[?? - / ?] [instructing?entrusting?] them what to do with it _ I rejoice to say / that all the our family is in high health The steam / Boat enterprise is successful The [Euncha?] is / purchased and Robert is filling her up you know / I am [c-??] to ¼ in her + the other The [Muland?] safely / so that I now get in this [B — D—?] I will / write to Mr Griffin in regard to you in a few days / I [??] for the seasons a [g–?] you in my [land?] do /
