These books were given by a dealer in / books, to Mrs George Depont Pratt of Brooklyn (Helen Sherman Depont), who asked / me to make such description of them, as I / thought advisable. The donor had ex - / pressed a wish that they should go to / the Schuyler Mansion, at Albany. Two of / them, with Elizabeth Hamilton’s autograph / in them, have been given there; none of them / have the autograph of Alexander Hamilton, / but nearly all have that of his wife.
Several of them have the names of her sons / Alexander and Philip. In [^ the copy of a will of] Mrs. Hamiltons / will owned by my sister and myself, she / says she divides among her sons, their / father’s “English library”. Undoubtedly these / books came form Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton’s / library at the “Grange” and therefore my / sister and I have thought it best to send / them there. The enclosed list tells what / the books are and gives the autograph signatures / in them.

The three volumes of Ferguson’s “History of the Roman / Republic”, were given by James Cochran to Philip / Hamilton, who must have been Hamilton’s eldest / son, a graduate of Columbia University, the old / “King’s College”. Killed in a duel in 1803. / (See portrait in Allan Hamilton’s “Intimate Life / of Hamilton). These [^three volumes] books seem to have / on them the stamp of Columbia College. / Presumably as heir, and probably as one of the / executors of her husband’s estate, Mrs. Hamilton / affixed her signature to all these volumes. / The signature of Louis McLane Hamilton in / the interesting old book “The Antiquities of Rome”, / London 1699, is that of a gallant officer of the / United States army, who served during the / Civil War, remained in the army, and was / killed shortly / after the peace in the Indian / warfare under General Custer. He was a gifted / man of unusual promise and highly / esteemed. Philip Hamilton 2nd married / Rebecca McLane, daughter of Hon. Louis McLane, / U.S. Minister to England. One volume is / presented to Mrs. McLane in London, by the author.

One volume printed in Philadelphia, 1843, was / given to P. Hamilton by A. Livingston. Probably / Angelica Livingston, who married Hamilton’s favorite / nephew, Alexander Hamilton.
The Schuyler Mansion, has as yet no room / or arrangement made, by which visitors can / sut and consult books. It is, therefore, / thought advisable to have any collection of books / given it, and these are so essentially / Hamilton books, that the “Grange” seems the / best place for them. The enclosed letter / to the present owners of the “Grange”, now / the Recotry of St. Luke’s church, namely the / Rector, the wardens and the Vestry of St. / Luke’s church, states the term of the gift / made to these gentlemen by Mrs. George / Depont Pratt and Miss Georgina Schuyler. /
An inexpensive book stand of some kind/ is given with the books, by these ladies. / Mrs. George Depont Pratt is a trustee with / Miss Georgina Schuyler of the Board of Trustees / of the Schuyler Mansion.
