A monochromatic engraving of the U.S. Defence of Fort Moultrie, S. C., during The War of 1812. Artillery gunners are loading and firing cannons at three ships offshore. The ships are hardly visible due to all the smoke in the air. Sergt. Jasper is raised above the others on a hill looking outward heroically grasping a sponge used to load a cannon, now being used as a flagpole for the badly torn Fort flag (?). The flag has a crescent in the upper left corner.Artwork Details
