A first day cover is an envelope bearing a stamp which is cancelled on the day the stamp is initially placed on sale by the postal authorities. Although most U.S. stamps are released nationwide on the first day, the U.S. Postal Service will designate a city or cities as the "official" first day city/cities. The location is usually appropriate to the subject of the stamp, and will be the only place where the “First Day of Issue” postmark is used.
This stamp is part of the American folklore series which includes Tom Sawyer (1972), Johnny Appleseed (1966), Daniel Boone (1968), Grandma Moses (1969).
Object was originally cataloged as part of the library collection and given a rare book number.Note Type
