Entitled: "Evening." "Invented Painted & Publish'd by Wm. Hogarth March 25th.1738 according to Act of Parliament. Engraved by B. Baron. Price 5 shillings": scene of family outing in London suburbs; at center right, wife, Junoesque, holds open fan with classical figures in left hand, husband's tricorn in right; to her right, husband, smaller than she, holds sleeping daughter in arms; husband, whose expression is not happy, is preceded by small and bedraggled Spaniel-type dog. At center left, following parents, small boy like little man stands astride stick (which he has been riding as a horse,) carrying doll in right hand, other toy in left. He howls, mouth wide open and eyes screwed shut, while at left slightly older sister admonishes him with closed fan. At background left, "Sadler's Wells" entered by woman carrying shoe; at right, a pub, the "Sir John Middleton," whose portrait may be seen on sign. Through open window of grapevine covered pub, two men, wigless and wearing clouts on heads, may be seen smoking pipes; beneath window, behind inn-yard fence, sit two women and man in wig. Immediately behind family, and before rural landscape, a cow, with swishing tail, is being milked (two-handedly) into circular wooden box by milk-maid whose face is concealed by cow; horns of cow appear directly above wig of father, giving him Midas-eared look. Stream and landing in foreground. In 18th c. black-painted wooden frame.Artwork Details
