Note

Donor stated: "Florence Jaffray Woodriff made this lace and mother of pearl fan about 1908-1909 as a gift for her future daughter-in-law, Ellen duPont Irving, known as Elaine. Elaine du Pont Irving and John Jaffray Woodriff were married at Sunnyside, 27 March 1909." This last statement is inaccurate. The wedding was at the Church of St. Barnabas in Irvington, NY. The bride's home at that time was Sunnyside. John Jaffray Woodriff was the son of Florence Jaffray Woodriff and John Richmond Piers Woodriff. Donor's documentation could refer to Florence Jaffray Woodriff as the maker of the lace of the fan leaf. Stamp on fan leaf, however, strongly suggests entire fan was made professionally and purchased at Tiffany to complete bride's wedding attire. [Jessa J. Krick, 10/19/2009]
