MP.93.542Description
Stained and varnished wood file box with hinged top, storing family catalog records. Varied types of light wood used for sides, top, bottom: Bottom is pine, top and sides are tulip poplar, a regional wood of New York. Interior is unfinished, as is bottom exterior, but top and sides are darkly stained and varnished. Two butt hinges join the top to box. Top is not a straight cut from box; instead, it slopes slightly upward toward hinge so the hinged end is shorter than the open end. Joinery at corners of box is like dovetail but teeth are at 90 degree angles to each other. Cards inside are 5" x 8" and record and itemize family provenance and history of objects at Montgomery Place.
Cards organized by room and held in place by metal rod running lengthwise at bottom of box with sliding metal plate attached at back to hold cards in place. Manila and blue subject dividers divide and organize file cards into different room headings: "Charter Room" "Entrance Hall" "Library" "Billiard Room" "Pantry Hall" "Drawing Room" "Back Pantry" "Ground Floor" "South East" "South West" "Study" "North East" "North West" "China Closet" "Hall 2nd Floor" "Coach House" "Coach House Apartment" "Removed". Original box used by John Ross Delafield to record objects in rooms at Montgomery Place.Made/Created
