“Wayne in a letter he dated camp / at White Marsh 21 Nov. 1777. After congra /
tulating him on his success at Saratoga / speaks disparagingly of the campaign in / Pennsylvania. Intimates that advantage / had not been taken of the favorable turns of / fortune - of the bad position of the army before / the battle of Brandywine. /
& at Germantown fortune again pushed on / our army for the full three hours; the enemy / were broke, dispersed and flying in all / quarters, we were in possession of their whole/ (illegible word) together with their artillery / back of it (?) . A wonderful (?) attack was made / on a house into which six light companies had / thrown themselves to avoid our bayonets; this / gave the enemy time to rally, our troops were / deceived by the attack, taking it for something / formidable, they fell back to attest on what they / deemed a serious (?) affair; the enemy finding / themselves as further pursued and believing it / to be a retreat, (illegible word); confusion ensued, / and we ran away from the arms of victory / ready open to receive us. /”
(illegible word) (illegible word) 0.6. 360.
VERSO
“Speaks of further campaigns (?), but does not hopes / for despair for better times “if our worthy General / “will but follow his own good judgment without / “listening too much to (illegible word) counsel – “”
NB. (illegible word) (illegible word) by innuendo, to be noted / in the correspondence of (illegible word) persons with Gates / about this time shows that there had been / previous caballing between them.
