Notes

Remarks: Treatment Report: Stripped paint with a combination of proprietary paint strippers and a heat gun. The coating was found to be amazingly tenacious and a power washer was further employed to completely remove old coating. It was found that the thick paint under discontinuous gray enamel was a sand paint like that used on the house and other garden ornament at the site. Further findings indicated that the decorative wreaths on each side were actuallly applied lead elements, attached with machine screws. The lead wreaths showed no sign of being sand painted but instead were painted an off-white color indicating that the wreaths were mostly likely painted a contrasting color to the brownish sand paint. Primed surfaces with Rustoleum corrosion preventing coating and applied a final coat of Rustoleum enamel that closely matched the old wreath color. It was determined that the curator would have in-house craftsmen apply the contrasting sand paint as they had experience applying this unusual system.
