GARDENING FOR NEW YORKEntry/Object ID
L.2012.52Description
This highly detailed illustration shows several different products being prepared for the New York market. The roads and river provided the route for these goods--mushrooms, watercress, celery, and berries--to reach consumers. By the end of the end of the 19th century, both wild and cultivated mushrooms were harvested, as two vignettes in this example show. The accompanying article for this engraving states that the neighborhood near Washington Square provided the ready market for much of this produce and opined "the cheapest, surest, and most satisfactory garden is to be found in the shop of a vegetable dealer in the city."
