Painting: Half-length portrait of older gentleman in military uniform: subject turned to right, nearly full face; left arm rests on arm of chair; right hand holds sword hilt; with long hair; sideburns; brown eyes; ruddy complexion; blue coat with gold epaulettes, gold embroidery at neck and cuff; tips of white collar visible above high blue collar; medal pinned on chest: Order of Society of Cinncinati; belt, gilt sword, hilt with animal heads termini; sitter seated in red upholstered armchair with bearded mask at arm termini; ink inscription: "This is a copy for John Ross Delafield/by Charles C. Curran in 1910, from the portrait of Governor Morgan Lewis/ Born Oct. 16, 1754, Died April 17,1844/Painted by James Herring/ Owned by/ Maturin L. Delafield."; oval paper label on frame back "From/ Powell/ Frames/ Regilding & Artistic Framing/1983 6th Avenue/Bet 55th/and 56th Streets/New York"; Cross brace for canvas support. b. Frame: Gilt ornate frame with outer border design of repeating bellflower and leaves; C-shaped profile; serpentine shaped outline, leafy scroll, flower garlands surround frame; border of repeat decorative motif; half round concave molding; beading, rectangular liner.
