Gran Mosaico Di pompeiEntry/Object ID
MP.94.1186Description
Color print of a bordered mural showing a battle taking place on horseback and on foot with great spears on a vertical plain: at the left, much of the mosaic must have been damaged because the print shows piece incomplete. A man rides a horse in full armour and lances a man through the abdomen where he falls with his horse. A horse in the center is shown from the rear. In front of a chariot, horses to the right are in a frenzy. This is all bordered by a black and white block motif with square rosettes in the corners. Beneath this is an aquatic mosaic in three parts: The left shows five birds in a pond; the center shows a hog and an alligator facing each other with seven other brightly colored birds surrounding them. A snake confronts a small dog. To the right five birds sit on water. These spaces are divided by squares with a double incised circle in the center. The man on the horse (top left) bears the resemblance of Alexander The Great. Also a man near the shield stares into his reflection.Made/Created
