HARVESTING IN WINTER--ICE ELEVATOR AT BARRYTOWNEntry/Object ID
L.2012.251Description
Teams of workers harvested ice annually along the Hudson and stockpiled it for shipment to New York City. These images show two parts of the harvesting process. In the top image, workers systematically cut the slabs by hand and guide them to the steam-powered chain elevator that lifts them into the ice house. The lower image shows the interior of the ice house, where the ice slides along ramps and onto layers onto the floor guided by men wielding poles. The ramps and scaffold were raised as the ice house filled. The top two layers of ice were expected to melt. By the time this print was published, wastage in the ice industry had been reduced to between twenty and fifty percent, depending weather and the efficiency of the ice company in packing and transportation.
Two colored engravings of ice harvesting and storage; top image, workers stand on frozen river in front of large windowless building, workers with poles and tools to move ice blocks, sloped elevator transports ice to top of building at right, captioned: "HARVESTING IN WINTER.--ICE-ELEVATOR AT BARRYTOWN, ON THE HUDSON RIVER, N. Y.--VIEW OF THE APRON AND MODE OF STORING. --SEE PAGE 346."; bottom image, workers inside cavernous warehouse; wood plank walls and ceiling, ice blocks fill floor, figures on platform at rear move ice blocks towards ramp at center, figures on floor arrange ice blocks, captioned: " HARVESTING IN WINTER.--SCENE IN ONE OF THE COMPARTMENTS OF ICE-ELEVATOR AT BARRYTOWN, N.Y.--STORING THE ICE.--SEE PAGE 346."; at top left, printed: "348"; at top center, printed: "FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER."; at top right, printed: "[FEBRUARY 4, 1871."Made/Created
