Note

A "chapeau bras" ("hat-arm") refers to the cocked style in which the hat brims are folded up, making the flat hat easy to carry under the arm; this is an evolution from the tricorne. It was worn with the width of the hat extending from ear to ear (see portraits of Horatio Nelson and Napolean Bonaparte), later to evolve into the nose-to-back-of-head orientation, seen in later US naval uniforms [Jessa J. Krick, Assoc. Director of Collections, 9/4/2019].
