General Notes

Note Type

Curatorial Remarks

Note

Components h-k. feature Washington Irving and his works Tales of a Traveler, Rip Van Winkle, Life of Washington, Sketch Book, The Alhambra. One card is missing from the Washington Irving "book" of cards; one other card is missing for Cooper, as each book is comprised of five cards. Publishing dates appears to be in the 1890s. The image of Irving is similar to the portrait by Henry Darby (SS.79.35a-b) after the photograph of the author by Matthew Brady. The rummy-style games of authors were produced by several different companies in several different forms (later versions included more authors) and with different box illustrations from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
