Medal: Obverse; three seated female figures in low relief in front of two fluted columns; central figure holds model of steamship; PR figure hold anchor; PL figure hold scroll and quill; above central figures, portrait of man in laurel wreath; at PR in distance, small buildings and small boat with said; at PL in distance, city skyline; in relief under portrait: ROBERT FULTON/1765-1815"; in relief under figures: "FIRST USE OF STEAM IN NAVIGATION/ON THE HUDSON RIVER/ 1807"; engraved at PL: "E. FUCHS"; on reverse: six male figures aboard a ship; central figure in brimmed hat and sword, pantaloons and cape gestures with right hand; other figures engaged in hauling ropes, climbing rigging, etc.; mountains visible in distance; in relief around edge at top: "DISCOVERY OF THE HUDSON RIVER BY HENRY HUDSON A. D. MDCIX", "THE AMERICAN/NUMISMATIC SOCIETY", "HUDSON-FULTON/CELEBRATION COMM."; at center bottom, rigged ship flanked by "HALVE MAENE"; incused on bottom edge: "WHITEHEAD-HOAG" b-c. Case: Square black custom-fitted clamshell (b.); rounded corners; embossed on top: "Hudson-Fulton Banquet/September 29, 1909"; green satin-lined lid; green velvet-lined removeable case fitting (c.) with satin backing; green satin ribbon tabs for lifting; brass push button clasp and hinge.
