The Hudson-Fulton Celebration of 1909 marked the tercentenary of Henry Hudson's New World voyage and the centenary of Robert Fulton's steamship launch. In a grand show of civic pride, New Yorkers celebrated a two-week festival centered on New York and the Hudson River Valley. Festival events took place in towns throughout the valley from Manhattan to the Erie Canal and included parades, illuminations, art exhibitions, concerts and many other activities. A major cultural event like this inspired artistic and business endeavors of all types, including new popular music written for the occasion.
