Condition

Notes

Remarks: Canvas conserved by Felicity Campbell for Winter Antiques Show; canvas tightened and fresh varnish applied; fragile frame; small losses touched up by HHV's Alistair McLean; frame remains cracked and fragile, especially at corners.

Notes

Remarks: Felicity Campbell examined the canvas for possible inclusion in the 2012 Winter Antiques Show Loan Exhibition: the canvas has a matte finish overall and should be varnished; needs a spacer as it is loose in the frame there is visible daylight between frame and canvas; the canvas is very loose on the stretcher and should be tightened; it also needs a backing board; there are tension cracks in Katrina's skirt that should be toned; all this can be done before the new varnish is applied; Marylou Davis examined the frame: the plaque is missing from the frame; frame should be cleaned overall, the corner cornices have been painted with bronze powder paint that oxidized, this is an old repair and gives the corners a dull, tarnished look; other areas of the frame, like the diaper quilted texture area appear to be the original gilding which has not been repainted and is therefore bright; this frame should be cleaned and touched up, but no major work needed for display [Jessa J. Krick, 9/8/2011]

Notes

Remarks: Details of condition: Crazing in lower left corner 6/81.

General Note

Note

"When he entered the house, the conquest of his heart was complete... Here, rows of resplendent pewter, ranged on a long dresser, dazzled his eyes. In one corner stood a huge bag of wool ready to be spun; in another a quantity of linsey-woolsey just from the loom; ears of Indian corn and strings of dried apples and peaches, hung in gay festoons along the walls, mingled with the gaud of red peppers;... "From the moment Ichabod laid his eyes upon these regions of delight, the peace of his mind was at an end, and his only study was how to gain the affections of the peerless daughter of Van Tassel." Irving: "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent."
