Polychrome engraving of domestic scene in middle-class city or village house: seated about round covered table before fireplace are man, with hat, holding mug, second man with mug, and nursing mother, in mob cap, holding baby; to table, on which are a partly eaten plum pudding, and settings of plate, for, and spoon for 3, a capped woman is bringing a large joint of beef; beside table, two small boys, one seated in small chair, reading from paper "Save the King", seated dog, wicker cradle; in background, diamond-paned window, through which may be seen church spire and facade; on walls, such items as a branch, print "O the Roast Beef of Old England" (a copy of a real print that title by Hogarth, 1949, see VC.59.245), a double portrait, on shelf a "Family Bible", a "History of England", ink-well and quills, a goblet, a wall clock; over fireplace, hanging, a smoked ham; on mantle, mug, tankard, vases of greenery. Beneath scene, the following verse: "Contented in his present state, Behold JOHN BULL, supremely great. With each domestic Blessing: No anx'ous Cares do him molest, His Mind's at Ease His Heart's at Rest, With Comforts past Expressing. Surrounded by his Family, Joining their Song with merry Glee, They make his Mans'on ring: But if he's rous'd when Cause is good, To the last drop he'll spill his Blood, For ENGLAND and his KING. Now view the horrid sad Reverse; The Leveller's - Republic's Curse. Frenchmen's new fangled Laws, And if their's doubt of choice then pray Look at the Starv'd and lifeless way, Tears, Dagger, Rope, and Straw."
