Condition

Notes

Remarks: Felicity Campbell examined the panel for possible inclusion in the 2012 Winter Antiques Show Loan Exhibition: this painting has only been partially cleaned in the past; the face and white cravatte have been cleaned, but the hair and background have not been cleaned and seem very dark; more detail and definition in hair and contrast to the dark background would likely be revealed by cleaning; panel also needs a non-acidic backing, the current bakcing in acidic; replacement of cork spacers at top and bottom is recommended; Marylou Davis examined the frame: this is a lovely period frame that does not need any restoration work, maybe a tiny touch-up, but can be displayed as-is [Jessa J. Krick, 9/8/2011].

Notes

Remarks: Details of condition: Good. Much old and darkened varnish; needs cleaning; some frame chipping.

Curatorial Remarks

Note

Miscellaneous: From F.A.R.L.(Dr. J. Hall Pleasants, Baltimore, MD) In a ms. diary at Peabody Institute, Baltimore, Kennedy wrote: "April 14, 1831, commenced sitting to Hubard for a portrait." "March 6, 1832, Elizabeth has begun to sit for Hubard for a new picture, as we did not like that finished by him last fall. My portrait executed by him at the same time is very good."
