Note

Irving allegedly stayed at the Red Horse Inn/Hotel on Bridge Street in Stratford while traveling in England in 1815 (the specific name of the hotel is not mentioned in his letters of that period, but it is mentioned in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon in the "Stratford-on-Avon" sketch. It is unclear if Irving stayed there during this trip, but he clearly did know of it and included the name as the lodging of the sketch's author: " 'Shall I not take mine ease in mine inn?' thought I, as I gave the fire a stir, lolled back in my elbow chair, and cast a complacent look about the little parlour of the Red Horse, at Stratford-on-Avon." In 1831, Irving does stay there and writes to Peter Irving that "the little Hostess of the Red Horse was almost beside herself with joy at our passing a night under her roof." Regardless, the hotel traded on the Irving connection for many years, as this label attests [Jessa Krick, 6/12/2019].
