Curatorial Remarks

Note

See long typed letter from donor in object file; detail of condition: the bowl and stem are heavily pitted from tin pest, the surface has been over cleaned; appears to have been given to HHV following a visit from the Pewter Collector's Club of America in honor of donor's maternal grandfather; donor thought HHV should have a pair of John Yates ladles; quote from letter: "The condition of this item may be the source of at least one major American maker's complaint about the poor quality of metal he and other New York/New England pewterers [produced]. While this ladle is surely cast, the corrosion, scale or, 'tin pest,' removed by immersion in lyre is typical of the alloy called 'britannia.' "
