Description

The distinctive landscape and natural wonders of the Hudson River Valley reached a global audience through prints and popular magazines. Published in L'llustration in 1876, this image of the "pinnacle of the Palisades," a basalt outcropping, was intended to impress a French audience. The character of the Hudson made it very different from the Seine or the Loire, with natural elements like the Palisades providing the awe-inspiring views. Through this image and others in a series in the magazine "Notes on the United States," the editors focused on the unique setting of the Hudson and other regions in the States for the French-speaking armchair traveler. Partial page of a newspaper or journal: coloed engraving of a rocky outcropping of the Palisades; figure on path leading to rock; river with sailboats at left; pine trees and rocky slope at foreground; at bottom left, printed (in image): "C. Maurand", at bottom center, printed: "Notes sur les Etats-Unis.--LE PINACLE, BLOC BASALTIQUE DES PALISSADES DE L'HUDSON."
