LE VIGNE EN AMÉRIQUE.- VENDANGE SUR LES BORDS DE L'HUDSON
Entry/Object ID
L.2012.254
Description
By the 1860s, the Hudson Valley was known for its grape production, both for wine and the fruit market. As an article in Harper's Weekly from 1867 stated, "...indeed it may be said, that almost all points along the Hudson are finely adapted for grape culture."
This image appeared in the American edition of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper with the title "Gathering Grapes in the Vineyard at Marlboro-on-the-Hudson". Its repurposing in the French language edition suggests several realities in the world of publishing and of viniculture. Not only were valuable woodcuts quickly reused in foreign editions, some subject matter had great appeal in the European market. Furthermore, French vineyards suffered great damage from blight in the period from 1850-1870. Perhaps this image was meant as inspiration to rebuild, as grape culture was thriving in the Hudson Valley in the same period.
Colored engraving of grape harvesting in vineyard overlooking Hudson River; men and women at left cut grape clusters from vines; small wood crates with grapes at their feet; woman at left uses scissors to cut grapes from vine; children and baby seated in right foreground; figures carrying boxes with grapes at center; grape fields and farm building at center; river with sailboat and steamboat at top center and top left; mountains at riverbank in distance; at bottom center, printed: "LA VIGNE EN AMÉRIQUE.--Vendanges sur les bords de l'Hudson.--Page 518, col.2.)"; text in French on verso.
