Mr Gallatin presents his compliments to / Mr Irving, and is sorry that he cannot give him / any information respecting the trunk put on board / the Neptune by Dr. Irving, and of which he never / heard before. The Neptune left Harwick for / Antwerp in the beginning of July 1814, and remained / at Antwerp till the end of ensuing October. The / John Adams sailed from Texel for the United / States about 1st Sept’r of same year. Dr Irving / arrived in Ghent about the same time and / spent there several months. He must therefore / have ascertained what had become of the trunk. / Information may be obtained from Lloyd Jones / Captain of the Neptune, whether he received the / trunk at all, and, if so, to whom he delivered it. / Christopher HUghes Jun’r of Baltimore to whom it / was directed, & George M [Dallas] of Washington / who came home in the John Adams, may

perhaps also give some information on / the subject.
Mr. Gallatin did not received Mr Erving’s / note before Monday night; which will / account for the delay in answering.
