Irvington-on-Hudson August 2d My dear Kate I was very glad / to get your letter of the 28th / August [^ July] and to hear that your / husband was so much better / I had thought of you very / often and wanted very much / to hear and sometimes thought / I would write to you, but I am / very bad about letter writing / now-a-days and I am very / apt to put it off. I was sorry / not to have been able to get to / see you that day before you [END OF PAGE 1] Left the city, but I was not / well the latter part of the time / I was in town and just then / the weather was so intensely hot / I did not dare to venture out, / your Aunt Charlotte who is now / with us says that Sallie Grinnell / wrote to you some time ago / about that room you had in / Madison Ave. but she has / received no answer, perhaps / she had not the right address, / she and Morgan are so anxious / that we should [^ change] our winter / quarters that they are trying to / look out for us, and she wrote / to ask you more particularly / [END OF PAGE 2] About the house. Morgan / went there last week and saw / the room and thought ut very / nice, but found the dining / room was in the basement / which would five us two / flights of stairs to go up and / down three times a day and / she would want us to take / then room from the 1st October / which we could not do, so we / are still afloat for the winter / but we will [not] to go back to the / Hoffman’s unless there is some- / thing done about the plumbing / of the house which we began / to think was defective, but it [END OF PAGE 3] Is a difficult thing for us to / change, there are so many things / we want which we have been / accustomed to and which we / feel necessary to our comfort, / of course we could find it if we / could afford to pay a high / price but as we cannot we / must take the best we can get. / Your Aunt Julia and Aunt Charlotte / are both with us now, and / Morgan is generally here at / night from Monday until Friday / when he goes to his family at / Bridgeport, he takes his holiday / in that was from Friday afternoon / until Monday as it is too far [END OF PAGE 4] For him to go and come every / day. I am afraid I have very / little news to five you, Fanny / Major came out in June to spend / three months and returns again [^ in] / August, she has been most of the / time in Cooperstown and Geneva. / I am sorry you could not have / gone to the Porter wedding, it / must have been a grand affair / and I have no doubt was very / pretty. Give my kind remembrances / to Mr Williams who I hope will / continue to improve, and with / much love from all four Aunts / to yourself and your little, big / girls I am always your affectionate Aunt Kate [ENVELOPE] Mrs Fred Williams 22 Oakland Place Bufffalo N.Y.
