Rev’d Pierre Irving
You will observe from the date / if this my dear friend that I am in the land of / steady habits instead of on my way West as I rather / anticipated when I had the pleasure of seeing on / Monday last _ I arrive yesterday at 3 P.M. after / a tedious trip of 22 hours instead of 13, owing to dense fog we encountered in the Sound _
I found my friend Gallagher well + doing / well + apparently happy to see me _ IN the / course of conversation this morn’g, he informed / me that he rec’d a letter from Mr Chauncey yes - / terday dated at Rye, in which he states that / he has positively + conclusively declined to call / to Geneva + intends to remain for the present at / least where he is _ Mr G. states that it will / cause much regret + does not Know what the / congregation will do. _ He heard since he wrote / me to that effect that you had not been called / to Canandaigua + immediately write to a gentle - / =man of the Vestry at Geneva Respecting it _ But / this was before it was Known that Chauncey had / declined _ I thought you would probably like / to Know this _ if you already do not _ And I have / intended to write you altho’ you may deem it
[ END OF PAGE 1]
Not worth the postage _ Mr Gallagher does / not seem to KNow what will be the action of / the Church at Geneva upon receiving Mr C’s / declinature, as they almost Expected him to ac - / =cept _ I have gathered all the information / from Mr. G which he seems to possess upon this / subject, without his Knowledge of my intention / to write you _ + regret, if it would prove interest - / ing to you, that I have not more to add _ / We expect to attend a Convocation if the Clergy / of the diocese at Lansdown ab’t 15 miles from / here, tomorrow _ and I anticipate much pleasure / from the associations which I hope to form there / It is a monthly meeting which has been Establish - / =ed for some time past, for mutual intercourse / + spiritual improvement + has resulted in happy / Effects upon the Church at large _ This state / is so small that you can ride thro’ it in a day + in consequence they can meet without / much inconvenience _ On Saturday We Expect / to go to Boston, spend Sunday _ + look about / the City on Monday; return here on Tuesday + / then I shall wend my way to N. York as soon / after as I can leave _ by Wednesday or Thursday at / farthest _ I shall not in consequence be at / my post on Sunday next, to meet my class +c / If you are in the City + at leisure please inform / my boys of my absence + say to them tho’ absent / I shall remember them + that placing them on / their good behavior I hope to [^ receive] hear good accounts / when I return _ Having been absent so long
[END OF PAGE 2]
Already from my class I can scarcely justify my / present absence, + only do so by reflecting that / it is the only opportunity that will present for / a long long time to come _ perhaps forever _
Remember me most Kindly + respectfully / to all who may enquire +c And with my / best wishes for the happiness of yourself + yours / here + hereafter _ I am
Your friend + brother +c
Chas. H. Halsey
