Sunny Side, Irvington, Westch’r County N.Y. Nov. 8. 1861. Miss Katrina Irving Academy of the Visitation Georgetown D.C. My dear Katrina As usual of late, I am behind / hand with my correspondence, for I have not / yet acknowledged the receipt of your two / last letters, and as the last one bears the / date of Oct’r 20th and came to hand on the 22nd / the delay would appear almost inexcusable, but / as the old saw says, “better late than never” I will / drop all excuses and “take my pen in hand”. I ought to have written sooner to day how / much I was pleased with your two last, the / last especially, both with the matter and the / manner. As you say that the present is / to be your last year at school. I am glad that / you are determined to make the most of it. Changes are still from time to time taking / place among our friends _ you may have observed / by the daily papers, that your cousins the Storrows / [END OF PAGE 1] Have recently lost their husband and father. / Mr Storrow had been suffering for some time / from an attack of paralysis, his death therefore / was not unexpected, yet the family were / hardly prepared for the short attack that ended / his life, he was seriously ill but a day or tow. Your cousin Irving Grinnell reached home the / day before yesterday from his jaunt to Europe, / in good health and thankful I presume that he is / safe here. You have no doubt read the account / of the serious disaster that occurred to the “Great Eastern” / [^Steam Ship] on her late voyage to New York. Your cousins / Irving Grinnell and Irving Van Wart were among her / passengers and you have seen by the accounts in / the papers, how very near they came to "going to / Davy Jones” Your cousin Charlotte Grinnell with / her youngest little boy, Willie, have passed a / few weeks with us and left us only a day / or two since for their home on the Cayuga lake. Your Aunt had been for some time on very / [END OF PAGE 2] Feeble health, and little Willie ehn he / started on this jaunt had barely recovered / from an attack of measles; but we / have returned them both to Ingleside / with improved health. Your Uncle / Sanders I. and his wife Julia G. have / also been at Sunny Side for the last / three weeks or so and were about to / leave us today for their home in / Canandaigua, but they defer their / departure, a severe head ache having / attacked Sanders. Sanders’ health has / been very indifferent for some time past, / what his ailings are I do not certainly / know, only that he has been in the / hands of the doctors for the greater part / of the summer and Autumn, who as the sage / Lancelot [Gobbs] would say have been “trying / [END OF PAGE 3] Conclusions upon him” a part of / the time he was at a [^ new] water cure establishment / at “Clifton Springs”, on the upper part of / Canandaigua Lake, with but very moderate / benefit: finding himself a little stronger, he thought / that he would try a visit to Sunnyside, he / reached here safely and the visit to the old / homestead, I think will prove superior to all / the “Water cures” and all the manip-??] / manipulation of the [Steam?] doctors I believe I must end my letter in your / style and say “I must now close”. [ensuring?] you that I am very sincerely Yours Ebn’r Irving
